Victims speak up in Burnett's Amnesty spot
8 Jan 2010 | 7:54 amLeo Burnett in Venezuela worked with six different directors on this intense Amnesty International appeal. "We work for those who know more about human rights. The ones who don't have any," says the line at the end. And those are exactly the folks who explain in the spot what Amnesty is and does—the twist being that their testimonies come as they're tortured, abused and held captive. In a sense, this is empowering, since they speak out at the precise moment when their tormenters would wish them to suffer in silence. This device, along with the quick-shifting scenarios and contrasting visual… -
Sony packs company ethos into 90 seconds
8 Jan 2010 | 6:01 amDirector Noam Murro throws everything but the kitchen sink into this epic 90-second cinema spot from 180LA that takes us through the four worlds of Sony: electronics, music, film and games. The fifth might be bankruptcy, as this clip clearly cost serious coin. There's no denying it's visually impressive and probably causes seizures and orgasms when viewed on the big screen. I think our young hero may have bought some drugs in that alley. The tagline is "make.believe," and you pronounce the "dot." The company says: " 'Believe' represents ideas and ideals, while 'make' represents the ability to… -
Suicide: still not the best advertising theme
8 Jan 2010 | 5:32 amOh goody, another suicide ad. What is it about cars that leads people to the suicide theme? You'll recall that Volkswagen disowned a rogue suicide-bomber spec commercial four years ago. General Motors had no such choice after airing its disastrous suicidal-robot spot in the 2007 Super Bowl. Now comes a presumably unauthorized (or at least deniable) Audi spot showing a man in a parking garage trying to kill himself by attaching a hose to his tailpipe. Wouldn't you know it, to his profound dismay, the diesel-powered Audi won't produce enough toxic exhaust to do the job. Bummer. The on-screen… -
Cannes feels your pain, but is that enough?
7 Jan 2010 | 10:02 amThe recession is over. Maybe. The ad world certainly hopes so, having shed an estimated 46,000 jobs during the Great Recession. The lucky few who remain are breathing a sigh of relief and looking forward to a new reality of tighter budgets and more scrutiny given to frivolous expenses. So, where does that leave Cannes, the industry's pre-eminent annual boondoggle? The festival and award show, which saw a steep drop in attendees last year, announced the opening of 2010 registration by trumpeting a price freeze: A full-week pass will cost $3,100—not chump change, but no higher than last year. -

Since regular job posting is too old-school, the shop has crafted a video to inspire candidates. Thankfully, the "Take It to the Next Level" video skips the atrocious lip-dub approach of Publicis London in favor of a more straightforward tack that earnestly attempts to make the pitch process for a Web-dev project look sexy. 9 Jan 2010 | 10:51 amHey, don’t hat... judge, lest yee be judged. Time to visit a few new sites in case you need “company” this weekend.1) The Amish site above is likely not real, but, I can dream. I’m not signing up to find out though, lest black buggies start showing up in the middle of the night. (Amish conspiracy fetish I have—don’t ask.)2) Single? Hipster? (Redundant?) Makeoutclub!3) For those without that pesky first-date sex agenda.4) Algebra teachers need love too. 8 Jan 2010 | 2:03 pmI’m glad the network is all Lady GaGa over its recent ratings and ad revenue increase. They’ve gone from one demo geeky guys et al. to another (older women). Yeah, and...? Regardless of the buzz over the renaming (and its slow as hell website), its problem always seemed to be one of programming. Wasn’t a fan of the name change mah-self.The “if” part of the tagline equation from the previous iteration was the real heart of imagination and sci-fi. That was about the idea of possibilities. The current Imagine Greater seems too aspirational. As one response to the Ad Age piece summed… -
Jeep—The new Hummer?
8 Jan 2010 | 10:45 amThis isn’t about the new Jeep “I am” work that broke last month, because I pretty much ignored it. Except for, maybe it is. (Not to knock the agency, but it’s real hard to believe GlobalHue’s tagline is not derived from “I Am Ram,” or vice-versa per input from Jeep. Someone is riffing off someone here. Ad bloggers People outside the agency really do notice these things.)Ennyway, I was shoveling today as a 2010 Jeep FUCKING TANK Commander came flying down the street doing, say, conservatively 50 in a 25. First thought: Congrats Jeep—your brand truly inherited the Hummer A-Hole…

8 Jan 2010 | 11:05 amThe new decade is only in its second week, and already science has produced a technological breakthrough that will be a boon to mankind for years to come. This may very well be the most important technological breakthrough since Coors -

Conversation With A Creative Director
6 Jan 2010 | 12:01 amRecently I had lunch with a head creative guy at a successful agency who works on some very successful brands. I am not going to reveal his identity as his clients may be listening. He had some interesting things to say. I will be paraphrasing throughout. First he said, aside from the paycheck, there are only two good reasons to work in advertising. First, to hang around with funny people. And -

The Cluefree Manifesto
30 Dec 2009 | 11:01 pmTo many web maniacs, a pivotal moment occurred 10 years ago when something called "The Cluetrain Manifesto" was published. The Cluetrain Manifesto was a foundational document in the "conversationalist" school of marketing. It included "95 Theses" in the style of Martin Luther, meant as a denunciation of contemporary marketing and a clarion call to a new, idealized age of marketing enabled by

transmedia messaging--Santa's been doing it for years
5 Jan 2010 | 5:08 amTypical shoemaker's-kids-going-barefoot-problem: Haven't had time lately to update my own blog, but happily made time to update someone else's. Alan Wolk, creator of the new Hive Awards, kindly invited me to contribute to the show's excellent site. I wrote about how transmedia messaging (or deep media as some call it) may appear to be a new and complex marketing idea...but, really it's as old and simple as the selling of Santa. Read full article here. -
hey, hipster creatives, the world is uglier than you may think
20 Dec 2009 | 9:00 amOne of the things I appreciate most about a beach vacation (hello, Puerto Rico) is the opportunity to catch up on hand-held reading. So many magazines, so much down time. Which brings me to NyQuil ads saturating the print waves. Tagline: "For a Better Looking Tomorrow". Wha? Took me a re-read to get this concept: colds make you look really, really ugly but now there's an overnight remedy that gets you back to your old (beautiful) self. Trouble is, what's shown to be "ugly" is how lots of people look every day if they're not in advertising or in Santa Monica. (Other shots in the series can be… -
is radio the new TV?
17 Dec 2009 | 8:58 pmThanks to wonders of The Worldwide Internet, radio listening is on the rise, and as TV audiences continue to dwindle, I wonder if at some point we'll hit ratios of listeners vs. viewers we haven't seen since 1959.Part of what accounts for radio's comeback is podcasting, which allows you to tune into discussions that mine whatever esoteric subject you're interested in. If you're reading this blog (hey, thanks, btw) you're no doubt interested in advertising, and two podcasts devoted to this subject stand out.You may already know about the excellent Beancast, a weekly roundtable discussion… -

14 Dec 2009 | 6:06 pmA downside of being out of town this weekend--or upside, depending on your tolerance for Christmas spirit(s)-- was missing out on the sight of thousands of Santas who came out for the annual Santacon. Despite it's being billed as NOT A PUB CRAWL, it's a pub crawl taking place annually in cities around the world from New York to Chicago to Pasadena to Beijing. Close of Business for Adspace-Pioneers
13 Dec 2009 | 7:17 pmWell I am off to India tomorrow, so I thought I would do a end of year post. I do not think this blog would have been as strong as it has been without the knowledge I have gained from working at The Population. It was a massive year launching over 15 social media lead campaigns. I was doing the numbers the other night and that amounted to 80,000 people becoming fans of branded Facebook Pages and over 600,000 views of branded content on Youtube. The highlight was The Contender Australia Facebook Page, which now I would officially deem as an ‘online community’. There are currently over… -

Is Facebook making experiences more valuable?
30 Nov 2009 | 4:51 pmThe value of intangible experiences is being increased by the power of online social networking. Facebook allows you to now communicate and thus amplify your social experiences through the uploading of photos of the experience and status updates about those experiences. Look at the impact it is having on the experience of attending a Music Festival. It is now heightened by talking about it with friends before hand and alerting your network through updates, it is then valued again when you post photos up of the event afterwards. Personally, I know that I am a sucker to the experience economy. -
20/80 split because paid and earned media are best friends!
25 Nov 2009 | 3:34 pmThere are some great social media campaigns flying under the radar at the moment. There one common theme I can see amongst them is that they are not getting any support from paid media. Paid media is earned media's best friend, They work really well together. I think if you are looking to carve up a digital budget you should put at least 20% aside for paid media to help support the idea/content, this will then drive earned media results. Where the idea lives = Advertising ModelFacebook Page = Facebook Advertising Youtube Video = StumpleUpon, Facebook Advertising or Youtube ‘Supported Ad… -

Wrapping Up The Aughts
31 Dec 2009 | 1:06 pmTime to wrap up the aughts and throw’em in the trash (please don’t recycle them). That’s what most people think: Current Decade Rates as Worst in 50 Years As the current decade draws to a close, relatively few Americans have positive things to say about it. By roughly two-to-one, more say they have a generally negative (50%) rather than a generally positive (27%) impression of the past 10 years. This stands in stark contrast to the public’s recollection of other decades in the past half-century. When asked to look back on the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, positive feelings outweigh… -

Defriending Facebook
23 Dec 2009 | 5:47 pmI try to stay on topic with this blog. That’s difficult with such a disparate, unwieldy age demo. Add to the mix the disparate, unwieldy phenomenon known as social media - and things can get complicated and gooey. I heart TED
27 Dec 2009 | 4:13 pmThere are three places that I turn to every week for inspiration and unforgettable stories: The Moth, This American Life, and TED Talks. TED is one of those brands that truly delivers on its promise - Riveting talks by remarkable people, free to the world As this year comes to a close, I'm reminded of the three new-to-me-in-2009 talks that I can't stop passing on. Top 5 Ideas
26 Dec 2009 | 2:55 pmI'm a big fan of the New York Times Magazine annual Year in Ideas issue. It uncovers both magical oddities and major shifts in consumer wants and needs (aka: trends). Here are my five favorites from their A>Z index of how our world is changing. Good Enough Is the New Great. An idea I've been looking for words for - basically, "Companies that had focused mainly on improving the technical quality of their products have started to notice that, for many consumers, 'ease of use, continuous availability and low price" are more important'." The triumphant return of Artie Isaac

The fuzzy-headed agency founder known for stepping out of his sedan surrounded by Cheech-and-Chong-style plumes of sweet smoke. The soon-to-be mom who, pregnant and restless, cheffed up an ecommerce index that would be covered on CNN every holiday season for years to come. The uniting and dividing of a huge conglomerate agency designed to rule them all. The three friends who rallied a wholly unlikely new business win in Indy… -
The new influencers: Grandparents weigh in
3 Dec 2009 | 11:15 amA new survey found a surprising trend: The nuclear family is losing ground to multigenerational living. More people are choosing to move themselves – and their children – in with Mom and Dad, often to cut costs. Today, 6.2 million or 5.3% of all U.S. households are multigenerational – that’s up 120% in nine years. These households are fundamentally different than those of the care-giving Oreo Generation. In 62% of these multigenerational cases it’s the adult children who are moving back with their parents, who are the grandparents. Three-fifths of these grandparents are providing… -
AT&T and Apple: Co-op advertising done right
24 Nov 2009 | 6:21 amLike most of America, you're probably watching the all-out holiday advertising war between the two leading cell phone providers. Frustrated, perhaps, with the staying power of those fun "there's an app for that" ads (Apple is known for finding a clever idea and sticking with it to the point of complete exhaustion. It seems Justin Long will be playing Mac, for example, until well into his own middle age), Verizon fought back with the most emasculating force in advertising: sarcasm. Their "there's a map for that" campaign exploited an AT&T weakness and…

Josh's Band
6 Jan 2010 | 1:08 amIn the Autumn we went out and about on behalf of T-Mobile and asked people what they would do if they had free texts and internet for life - which is what you get as a T-Mobile Pay As You Go customer that regularly tops up. And in the course of this we bumped into a guy in Brick Lane called Josh Ward who said that he would us it to start a superband. Which sounded like fun. So we helped him and the single from the band that comprises 1107 musicians in total is released on Monday. -
The price of everything and value of nothing
9 Dec 2009 | 9:15 amImage courtesy of Neato Coolville As brand builders we have always instinctively felt that the sales lever so beloved by consumers, the price promotion, was not just grubby but also rather damaging to the long term health of that brand and business. That said, we have rarely been able to articulate our dislike of price promotions in a way that stands up to any kind of scrutiny, making us seem petulant and un-commercial in the face of the quick volume that can be delivered by discounting. -

What I Won From HomeServerLand
6 Jan 2010 | 7:52 amLast year, I setup a Windows Home Server (WHS) to run as a file and backup server. During the time, I connected with some of the industry leaders in the WHS realm. This was when I met a WHS expert by the name of Alexander Kent. Alex had developed a powerful Add-In for WHS called Grid Junction. Simply put, Grid Junction is a “must-have” Add-In for anyone who powers their WHS with an uninterrupted power supply (battery backup). During a lengthy power outage, Grid Junction can be scheduled to safely power down your Windows Home Server and networked PC’s to prevent data loss or… -
Thank You to a Great Partner – Doclix / AdSide
29 Dec 2009 | 11:43 amThroughout the years, I have worked with some really good partners. Whether it is being very responsive, super proactive or just plain easy to work with, every so often, a particular partner would stand out from the rest. Today, I wanted to give a quick shout out to one particular partner that is all of the above… and more! That partner is Doclix’s AdSide Network. Microsoft Banned for Port Scanning
10 Sep 2009 | 8:52 amRecently, a client contacted me to share that their web server’s firewall was busy banning IP addresses from port scanners. Sure enough, a quick peek at the server logs show that there were indeed multiple IP bans lately. Most of these were temporary bans as the firewall did not deem these infractions critical enough to be permanent bans. When looking at the notifications, a particular domain in the ban list caught my eye. It was a microsoft.com domain along with an IP address. A WHOIS lookup shows that this IP does indeed belong to the software giant Microsoft Corp, manufacturer of… -
How to Filter Out Spam From Twitter Search
16 Jul 2009 | 8:32 amTwitter’s search actually does a pretty good job at locating tweets for a particular geographical region. Just enter the city name in Twitter search and it will find all results containing this city. Recently, there has been an increase in Twitter robot accounts taking advantage of adding a city name to their auto-posting of classified ads. When I search for the term Vancouver, I now also see a list of annoying classified posts from various “for sale” bots. I was so annoyed by this that I even tried Twitter’s LEAVE and BLOCK commands but apparently, the spam… -
Cannot Upload Twitter Background – RESOLVED
19 May 2009 | 8:52 amTwitter is a fun and productive tool that allows its users to send and read other users’ updates. This free social networking service has grown so exponentially that, unfortunately, it is often times plagued with bugs and server time outs – frustrating to say the least. The latest bug that is tormenting Twitter users worldwide is the inability to upload a background image. A Twitter background has to be 800 kilobytes in file size and must be in a JPG, GIF or PNG format. But even if you abide by these rules, many users are still getting the dreaded “There was a problem with…

Your line of fans
6 Jan 2010 | 6:40 amThis one is a one from us that we did last autumn for Rexona Teens, a deodorant for teenagers that, being always the same product, changes its tagline every year, "Dance and teens", "Love and teens" or, in this case "Fans and teens". To support this last one we created a little promo using a Facebook app called "Your line of fans", that allows you to show if you're a better fan than others, and you're required to create the longest line to support your favorite artist, inviting your friends to be formed in your line (and then the friends of your friends), so you could use the line to try it…

Another example of how NYC is not anywhere else.
30 Dec 2009 | 8:42 amHere's a graphic showing what NYC listened to in '09 to vs. what the rest of us listened to. I like how "We" are listening to Animal Collective just like "They" are, but that "They" are listening to it in 64-point type while "We" are still on 18. And, since I don't see Gov't Mule, the Crowes or even Umphrey's McGee on there, by "We" I do not mean me. Thanks to Last FM. -
"Cold Mountain" is Not a Christmas Song
23 Dec 2009 | 1:27 pmA few years ago my brother Brad used to be in a band called The Grand Fiasco. (Great name, I know.) They catered to the local jamband fans and played a lot of shows in KC and a couple out of town, too. He plays bass, guitar and pretty much anything else he wants to try -- the jerk. Anyway, he wrote a song called "Cold Mountain" that everybody really dug.And while it's not a Christmas song, the following sentiment makes me feel really good. "So what if there are times when we’re left to wonder If we’ve been out here for too long And all these… -

Great News: Kidrobot is Moving to Boulder [15]
8 Jan 2010 | 7:32 amKidrobot, a New York-based company known for its limited-edition vinyl toys and apparel, is moving its headquarters to Boulder. Paul Budnitz, the company’s founder and president, said that Kidrobot hopes to have the head office operational in Boulder by March or April. Boulder is a “creative hub” and an “arts hub” that has a calm that contrasts the big-city noise, Budnitz said. “About a year and a half ago, I moved to Montana. I felt New York City was a wonderful place, but creatively, it seemed I was doing my best work when I was away from the…

The Thing About Steven…
31 Dec 2009 | 8:00 pm“I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good thing, therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any fellow human being let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” - Stephen Grellet, 1773-1855 (French-born Quaker Minister) Welcome to 2KX. Wolves In No Clothing…
14 Dec 2009 | 11:00 pmToday, dear reader, I write to you in anguish. I write to you in hopes that my impassioned words will not fall on deaf ears. I write to you about the evil that is PETA. Don’t be fooled by PETA. On the surface, they’re harmless little bunny-huggers but underneath that cutesy exterior lurks their more sinister, true purpose: world domination. Their entire plan is eliminate all the things we (and by “we” I mean heterosexual men) like – juicy steaks, leather jackets like the Al Pacino wore in “Serpico”, unnecessarily fast fossil-fuel powered cars, furry… -

14 Dec 2009 | 2:18 amThat nutty Seth Godin has a free new ebook out called “What Matters Now”. I’ve just downloaded my copy. It’s awesome – packed full of “Wait a minute!” truths. You should download it too. Because it’s awesome and you’ll probably read it and say “Yeah. Of course.” And then you’ll read it again and say “Yeah. Of course!“ And it’s free, which makes it the perfect early recession-Christmas gift. Get it here. Now.

11 Innovative Business Cards
10 Jan 2010 | 1:08 amI am not so sure about love at first sight but I am damn sure about the impact of first impression in any field and more so in marketing. It’s a war out there in market where most of the brands more or less provide the same features or services. The thing that decides the winner is the marketing strategy which can make people curious enough to first read the advertisement and the product features are automatically covered later in the process. That’s where an innovative and inquisitive business card can play an important role in attacking the subconscious mind of consumers. -

Creative smartness of the Sunlight campaign
10 Jan 2010 | 2:26 amThis is creative smartness, and this is creative smartness. This print campaign from Indonesia is not for a food festival or for a restaurant; it has been developed by Lowe Jakarta for Sunlight Dishwashing Liquid. (See larger images here) The campaign consists of three series of ads- Appetizer, Main Course, and Dessert, and these ads resemble the recipe pages in cooking magazines. The idea is to denote the message that it takes only one teaspoon of sunlight to wash a lot of dishes. And, this message has been conveyed through fresh and appropriate way. I have said ‘appropriate’, because… -
When the tattooed cupid promotes the car
10 Jan 2010 | 2:14 amWe have seen those angry cupids who promote condoms in the guise of spreading love. Cupids are not strange to advertising. Another cupid, who is apparently inexperienced in his trade, promoted an insurance company. But, this advertising version of cupids is indeed a bit belittling to the entire cupid race and it challenges our original perception about them. The campaign, developed by Atletico International promotes the new Ibiza Cupra model through tattooed cupids. The ad features a tattooed version of the legendary love archer flying above the Ibiza Cupra and firing heart-shaped arrows at… -
Twilight Book Saga: vampire victims in Sydney
10 Jan 2010 | 1:59 amWell, vampires are increasingly becoming more popular than Paris Hilton. (am I right in the use of the word ‘popular’?)yes, its true. And, now this advertising effort too taps this vampire fame. To promote the Twilight Book Saga in time with the launch of the new movie, US Sydney went around biting the necks of people in billboards and adshells around Sydney. There wasn’t a fashion model in Sydney safe from getting bitten. The trend took off in social media, with fans of Twilight sticking their own red dots on adshells to create vampire victims everywhere. This scary ( ha ha)… -

Dockers: definition of manliness DIV: Male Chauvinistic commercial Female chauvinistic pain. Men need women What did you consider as a common element in all these ads? One can say that all these ads are rooted on gender-biased humor. We can also argue that this kind of treatment is not harmful or detrimental to the dignity of womanhood or ‘manhood’, as it just presents an idea with a humorous depiction of man-woman relationship. Anyway, just put the argumentative side aside for a while, and… -
Ponder before you text
10 Jan 2010 | 1:09 amEarlier, we have seen the sad victims of text bullying. Now, in this interesting advertising effort, we can see persons who ponder before they text. This print advertising campaign, developed by Young & Rubicam, New York, aims to direct traffic to giveitaponder.com, the website from LG. The art-direction and copy are interestingly interwoven with an element of noble humor. Well, stroking a beard is presented as a symbol of pondering. Get Creative When Looking for Your Internship
8 Jan 2010 | 12:23 pmWhen I was interviewing for my first job out of college, there was one part of my resume employers asked about most: my summer internship. 8 Jan 2010 | 2:33 pmI don't know about your office, but Ad Age didn't make out so well with the holiday swag this year. A Small Agency's Guide to Going Digital
7 Jan 2010 | 1:35 pmAs an agency that transformed itself from traditional to 100% digital over the span of about 10 years, the question we get asked most often at conferences and industry events is, "How did you guys do it?" Three New Year's Resolutions Your Agency Needs to Make
6 Jan 2010 | 8:12 amI'm a big fan of resolutions. Each year I personally make three. Professors Teaching Social Media
4 Jan 2010 | 6:26 amRecently I wrote a post about what I would tell a social media professor. After publishing the article, I’ve spoken to a number of professors about how they teach social media. What I realized is that so many of these teachers are using social media, are interacting with students online, and sharing their thoughts. They might not have the most followers or be the easiest to find, but they share valuable information. I’ve created a “Professors” Twitter list to help compile these instructors in one place. So in true crowdsourcing fashion, I’m asking for your help! -

The Only Social Media Metric that Matters
21 Dec 2009 | 6:45 amObviously I’m a huge fan of social media. I know it has the power to revolutionize how we market to consumers – in fact it already has. As powerful as it might be, it has a major shortcoming: tracking. Tracking is a major issue because right now, we really can’t quantify the power of social media. We’re able to identify a community, show pages with large numbers of fans, and create campaigns with interaction – but how does that relate to sales? Sales is the only metric that matters, everything else is just a potential indicator. credit The Problem With Indicators In social media,… -
I Know Why Your Social Media Strategies Keep Failing
17 Dec 2009 | 10:59 amSeriously, it’s probably you. Most campaigns fall apart because of the company itself. Don’t blame lack of interest, the medium, or your community. If you can’t convince your consumers to be interested enough in you to fan you on Facebook, how are you getting them into your stores to buy your product? For those don’t want to keep digging their own grave look for the warning signs. Fix them and you’ll see how consumers clamor to be part of your community. credit PC Sucks – We Want Sensational Being perfectly politically correct will kill your campaigns. -
5 Ways to Go From Lurker to Leader
14 Dec 2009 | 5:00 amWhen I first started writing my blog, everyone told me that leaving comments on other sites was a great step to building traffic. It’s true, commenting on blogs helps you become connected to the community, makes you stand out, and can drive traffic to your own blog. For me, though, convincing myself to write a comment was difficult. I was considered a lurker – I’d read the article, have an idea, but never share it with the writer. I worked hard to train myself out of that mentality. I now share my thoughts whenever possible. It not only helps build myself as a leader in the…
