It’s a bit of a cliché to say that Americans don’t understand football, and especially don’t understand the importance of international tournaments like the World Cup. But sometimes we literally don’t understand what’s going on. As I write this post, “CALA BOCA GALVAO” is the top trending topic on Twitter. Galvao refers to Carlos Eduardo dos Santos Galvão Bueno, who announces Brazilian national football team matches on Rede Globo, a massive Brazilian television network. As Raphael Tsavkko Garcia explains on Global Voices, Galvão Bueno’s style…

  • Who to support? Algorithms for World Cup 2010

    Ethan
    7 Jun 2010 | 7:55 am
The 2010 FIFA World Cup starts on Friday, which means that football fans across the world have a difficult task this week: determining who to support. At first glance, this doesn’t seem to be a difficult task – contrarians aside, we support our national sides. But that’s not much help if your nation didn’t qualify… unless, like Ireland, you didn’t qualify in a way that gives you a team to root against throughout the tournament. And even if you have ties to one or more nations who’ll be competing, there are dozens of qualifying matches where…

Micah Sifry, one of the founders of the Personal Democracy Forum conference, asked me to focus my speech at his conference on some of the recent writing I’ve been doing on digital activism and theories of change. Given that provocation, I wrote out a talk that would take me roughly an hour to deliver. And given that I’ve got 7-10 minutes on stage on June 3rd at the end of a long and action-packed day, it seemed wise to post the whole talk here for anyone interested after hearing my abbreviated version. As it turns out, I just talked to Micah, and this isn’t the talk he was…

If you’ve been following my tweets lately you can tell that World Cup fever has set in for me. And it’s not just because I’m living in Johannesburg. I’ve had a long love affair with football thanks to my late father. You see I was *the* quintessential daddy’s girl (in many ways I’ve inherited both his best and worst traits) and for the first few years of my life I was pretty much attached to his hip…all his workmates at the airport knew me, all the waiters at his favorite drinking spots knew me (especially at the Thorn Tree in the then New Stanley…

Target baby-boomers if you can. If you haven’t heard the phrase before, a ‘baby boomer’ is used to define the group of people born between 1946 and 1964.  Having been born in the post-WWII period, they represent an above-average burst of population growth, and thus form an outsized ‘bubble’ of consumers.  It’s been said that all one…

Commentary submission by Project 21 Juneteenth is the June 19 anniversary of the day in 1865 when the black residents of Galveston, Texas learned about the Emancipation Proclamation and their freedom. Today, its commemoration is a reason for parties and celebration nationwide. More importantly, however, Juneteenth is a time to reflect on where we as blacks have been and a time to conduct an azimuth check on where we are going. It is a time for clarity. It is a time to count the ways in which we are free and a time to take stock of the chains that bind us still. Juneteenth is a time to take…

There’s a discussion over at White African about what to tell to the powers-that-be at Nokia in regards to their Africa strategy. My favorite suggestion comes from Frontline SMS’ Ken Banks: …They should seriously look at investing in start-ups and other entrepreneurial activity across the continent. They should take some of the big money they’re throwing at high-profile global social change/technology competitions, which generally attract western organisations, and do more smaller-scale work at the grassroots level. They need to send out a strong message that they’re…

The singularity is defined by futurist Ray Kurzweil as being the point at which technological advancement exceeds human capacity to control and fully understand it. It’s the point where artificial intelligence and replication converge and machines can strategically produce other machines without human direction. Movies like TERMINATOR and THE MATRIX are all about the horrible ways such a scenario might play out. This post is about a different singularity. A point at which technology, progress, wealth and modern advancement converge without the inclusion of an entire continent of nearly…

Which is more stable the Linux operating system or the human mind? We like to think that the brain or central logic of computers is very similar to our own brain and central nervous system. • World Cup: blaming the 'incompetent African'

  • Truth, free speech and hate speech

    15 Jun 2010 | 4:37 am
Once upon a time, parliament enacted a law that was supposed to prevent folk from giving each other a bad name, then killing each other. The giving each other a bad name was seen as a necessary prelude, a justification for the impending killing, and wisdom had it that preventing the name-giving would nip the intention to kill right in its bud. The name-giving was therefore forbidden as hate speech, defined below. Read more...

  • Will the South African economy get a kick from the World Cup?

    Sandeep Mahajan
    8 Jun 2010 | 2:32 pm
As the month-long FIFA 2010 World Cup tournament kicks-off on June 11, all eyes will be on South Africa. Quite literally, since the 2006 tournament in Germany had a global viewership of around 30 billion.   The event is an opportunity for South Africa to showcase itself not just as an attractive destination for tourism and investment but also as the Rainbow Nation, home to people of every race, color, and creed.   The economic dividends will be plenty. As President Zuma explained: “the country’s transport, energy, telecommunications, and social infrastructure are being…

    1 Jun 2010 | 9:00 am
My colleague and good friend, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, gave an inspiring speech at Harvard where she described Africa as the next BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China).  Everything she says in the speech is music to my ears (confession—I provided some background materials to her staff)—that Africa’s growth prospects are strong, that reforms seem to have taken hold—and her idea of African Development Bonds is innovative and worthy of discussion.   My only concern is the labeling of Africa as the next BRIC.  First, Africa is not a country, whereas each of the…

    3 May 2010 | 6:15 am
Tolstoy notwithstanding, the 20 African success stories described in the booklet “Yes, Africa Can” show that success comes in many different forms.  Broadly speaking, the cases fall into three categories: - Success from removing an existing, major distortion.  The best example is Ghana’s cocoa sector, which was destroyed by the hyperinflation and overvalued exchange rate in the early 1980s.  When the exchange rate regime was liberalized and the economy stabilized, cocoa exports boomed (and continue to grow).  Similar examples include Rwanda’s coffee…

Last night, there was a horrific thunderstorm near our home outside Boston. For over an hour, it felt like the thunder and lightening were both simultaneous and just outside our bedroom window. From 2:30-4am, flashes of light and rumbling, with giant roars, were constant.Thankfully, my beautiful wife Katie, who is 9 months pregnant, was able to sleep through much of it -- only by the grace of God.I'm usually the deep sleeper, but tonight God had lessons for me to learn. I had gone to bed worried about several things: a) the coming birth our first child - a girl, who was due June 4 but had not…
  • "Seedtime and harvest...will never cease"

    3 Jun 2010 | 9:28 am
A couple of weeks ago I joined a church member's family in harvesting their crop of maize (corn). We thank God for the good rains Zambia had experienced in the last farming season as there has been a good harvest for most farmers in our country. This is good for food security, especially with the vulnerable people of our society. Farmers are busy harvesting their maize, which is the staple food for most Zambians. The grain is made into mealie meal (maize flour) for cooking nshima/tsaza. However, pray for the harvest to progress well as the past few days of rain may cause much of it to rot…

    30 May 2010 | 4:58 am
Friends - On Sunday, May 30, I'm briefly speaking to Hope Fellowship Church in Cambridge, MA, where Katie and I are members.  It has been our home for the past 2 years while I've completed my Masters in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School (graduated this past Thursday).  Here are the comments I shared with the church today.-----------------"I've always loved kids and consider it the responsibility of all of us to defend them and provide for them, regardless of culture, country, or income level.  Now, as an expectant father, even more so. I'm glad to be here with you…

  • Cameron Herold: Let's raise kids to be entrepreneurs

    18 Jun 2010 | 10:46 am
In my opinion, this TED Talk by Cameron Herold is exactly what the world needs to hear.Cameron speaks of his own struggles in the education system. He speaks of his ventures and passion for business at a very young age and how his dad would never allow him to get a "regular" job. He always had to find new ways to earn his own money.Cameron states that children should be taught how to save at a young age and how to make use of their resources. Instead of giving monthly allowances to children give them opportunities to be innovative. Children should also be given the opportunity to nuture their…
  • Darwin's Nightmare

    18 Jun 2010 | 1:00 am
A 2004 documentary film written and directed by Hubert Sauper -- dealing with the environmental and social effects of the fishing industry around Lake Victoria in Tanzania.Quote from the Darwin Nightmare's website:"Some time in the 1960's, in the heart of Africa, a new animal was introduced into Lake Victoria as a little scientific experiment. However, the new fish multiplied so fast, that its white fillets are today exported all around the world."Huge hulking ex-Soviet cargo planes come…
