Public hearing on the handling of the Swine Flu pandemic
[21/01/2010]A public parliamentary hearing titled The handling of the H1N1 pandemic: more transparency needed? is to be held on the fringe of the plenary session of PACE in Strasbourg from 8.15-10 a.m. on Tuesday 26 January, immediately followed by a press conference. The hearing, organised by the Assemblys Committee on Social, Health and Family Affairs, will bring together representatives of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and of European vaccine manufacturers, as well as independent medical experts, to discuss this topic with parliamentarians. Some members of the Assembly including the outgoing Chair of PACEs Sub-committee on Health Wolfgang Wodarg (Germany, SOC) requested in a motion in December that the Assembly look into this question.(more..)
Trafficking in human beings: victims father speaks
[22/01/2010]As part of a parliamentary debate on action against trafficking in human beings and the need to promote the Council of Europe convention on trafficking, the PACE Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men will hold an exchange of views open to the press, in the presence of Nikolay Mikhaylovich Rantsev, the father of a victim of trafficking, and his lawyer, on Tuesday 26 January. PACE rapporteur on the Middle East: time does not play in favour of peace, negotiations must re-start
[21/01/2010]PACE Rapporteur on the Middle East Piero Fassino (Italy, SOC) has called on Israelis and Palestinians to re-start negotiations as soon as possible. Speaking in Jerusalem at the end of a four-day visit to the region, during which he met President Shimon Peres and President Abu Mazen, Mr Fassino said: We cannot accept an unending conflict in the Middle East. Thanks to President Obamas initiative, there is a new opportunity for peace. We must not let it go by. He said that in spite of difficulties, there were signals all agreed on, which showed peace was possible. The Assembly is to debate Mr Fassinos report in Strasbourg on Tuesday 26 January.(more..)
PACE winter session: Faked pandemics, a threat to health
[12/01/2010]Faked pandemics: a threat to health will be one of the major themes of the next plenary session of PACE, to be held in Strasbourg from 25 to 29 January. The PACE Social Affairs Committee has proposed the holding of an urgent debate on this subject. If the Assembly agrees when it adopts its agenda on the opening day, the debate is likely to be held on the morning of Thursday 28 January. The committee will be holding a public hearing on the same subject on Tuesday 26 January at 8.30 am, attended by representatives of the World Health Organisation (WHO), the European pharmaceutical industry and experts on the subject.(more..)

Ukraines presidential election meets most international commitments
[18/01/2010]The first round of Ukraines presidential election was of high quality and showed significant progress over previous elections, meeting most OSCE and
Council of Europe commitments, concluded the international election observation
mission in a statement published today.
The observers noted that the election demonstrated respect for civil and political rights, and offered voters a genuine choice between candidates representing diverse political views. Candidates were able to campaign freely, and the campaign period was generally calm and orderly.(more..)
Greece must co-ordinate its execution of European Court judgments more effectively, says PACE rapporteur
[20/01/2010]Christos Pourgourides (Cyprus, EPP/CD), PACE rapporteur on the implementation of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, has ended a two-day visit to Athens (18-19 January 2010) with a call for a number of problems in the execution of these judgments to be solved. Mr Pourgourides called on the representatives of the Greek authorities to co-ordinate more effectively the different state bodies which are responsible for the execution of the European Court's judgments. He also invited Greek parliamentarians to monitor the implementation of these judgments within the Parliament, and has been assured that they will do so.(more..)
